Countisbury Hill Fort
Iron Age Promontory Hillfort
This large promontory fort lies on the north Devon coast overlooking Lynmouth bay. The site is 1 mile (1.6km) in length from east to west, defended by the sea to the north, the River Lyn to the south and on the east by a massive rampart ¼ mile (0.4km) long and over 30 feet (9m) high, fronted by a less-formidable ditch and pierced by a single entrance gap.
