Newstead (Trimontium) Amphitheatre
Amphitheatre
The Military Amphitheatre the northernmost discovered in the Roman Empire, is clearly visible as a grassy hollow with substantial banking to the northern (river) side. It was attached to the Roman fort and camp complex at the site. An amateur archaeologist and Trimontium Trustee, Dr Bill Lonie, suggested its use and it was surveyed in 1993 and excavated and confirmed by a Bradford University team in 1996. The amphitheatre was oval-shaped with a central area of 37m by 30m and whilst it was not particularly large it would have been able to hold around 1500 spectators.
