Discovered from the air in 1977 about 220 yards (200 m) south of the Antonine Wall on the western side of Bar Hill, the Twechar encampment is classed among the smallest of the Antonine Wall labour-camps, constructed to house the Roman legionaries responsible for building the Wall and its fortifications. The camp is known from its SE side and short lengths of the NE and SW sides; its size may only be estimated but is constrained by topography.
