Silloans Marching Camp
Marching or Temporary Camp
Dere Street passes along the dorsal axis of this large sub-rectangular camp, thus destroying whatever defences were placed at the N & S gateways, which were centrally placed in their respective defences. There is a gateway with external titulum in the E rampart, displaced somewhat to the N, and a similar outwork at the opposite point in the W perimeter but no discernable corresponding gap in the rampart, though that is not to say that there was not one. The camp undoubtedly faced N, along the line of Dere Street, but this was probably for convenience, and dictated mostly by local topography. Several modern field drains cut through the ramparts of the camp, 2 minor trackways also branch off Dere Street and pierce the defences; the N rampart has also been partly destroyed by a modern “turning-circle” attached to the E side of the main road.
