Pilsdon Pen
Iron Age Hillfort
Situated at the end of a spur and commanding spectacular views, this oval fort has a double bank and ditch with counterscarp, with entrances situates to N, SE and SW. Probably dates to 1st century BC. A Roman ballista bolt was found here during excavations which revealed a number of huts, one of which contained a crucible evidently used to smelt gold, which could have been a goldsmiths workshop. There was also found a large rectangular building in the centre, that was later replaced by a banked enclosure, this may have been a shrine as at South Cadbury.
There is a Roman fort nearby on Waddon Hill.
