Y Bwlwarcau, Eastern Enclosure
Iron Age Hillfort
An unscheduled rectangular hillslope enclosure is located to the east and below Y Bwlwarcau hillfort (Atlas No. 1546), overlooking the confluence of Nant y Gadlys and Lynfi River. It is characterized by a substantial inner bank and outer ditch, measuring approximately 47 meters by 49 meters, enclosing an area of about 0.25 hectares. Despite its small size, the presence of substantial ramparts and its strategic position controlling the confluence make it a possible candidate for hillfort status. The enclosure is situated in the corner of a field and was recorded during aerial reconnaissance by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) in 2010. It is also marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map dating from 1885-1900, but little is known about it, and minimal investigations have been conducted, with no clear dating available. Further research and investigation may provide more information about the nature, function, and dating of this unscheduled hillslope enclosure and its relationship to Y Bwlwarcau hillfort upslope.
